Downtown Newburyport, MA 1764- Newburyport was incorporated as a town. 1811- There was a huge fire that leveled the downtown 1851- Newburyport was incorporated as a city 1950's- Newburyport went through some very tough times but in the 1970's went through an urban renewel that transformed the waterfront and the downtown with brick and cobblestone landscaping. The current churches and cemetaries reflect the historic look of Newburyport. The Coast Guard was born in Newburyport a little over 100 years ago. Shipbuilding was another major aspect of early life in town. In 1844 Donald McKay introduced the Clipper ship and in 1883 the last square-rigged ship built in Massachusetts was launced in Newburyport!
